We didn’t sit down one day and decide to become a local trekking company in Peru. It was more that after enough years guiding for other agencies in Cusco, walking the same routes over and over, working with hundreds of different travellers. It started to feel strange to keep doing it for someone else. So we stopped. Then, Saqra’s Trek by Auqui Peru was born.

A lot of what we saw in those years we didn’t like too much. Treks that were planned around how many people could fit into a group rather than the impact it had on communities or the environment. Guides and porters, hired from wherever was cheapest that season instead of from the communities that the trail actually runs through. It’s a small thing on paper, but it changes everything about a trek. Details like who you are walking with, whether the stop at a family’s house along the way is authentic. If it is a genuine visit or a photo opportunity that happens on a schedule because it’s in the itinerary.
A Local Trekking Company in Peru
Our local guides Peru are actually from these communities along the trekking routes we run. People we already knew because this is a small world once you have been in it long enough. When we stop at a family’s home on the trail, it is usually because we know them. We have probably shared a meal there, and we can actually talk to them in Quechua instead of through a guide translating a rehearsed greeting. You can’t really fake it, and you definitely can’t build it in a tourist attraction.

So that is what we have tried to build. Not a bigger company, not more treks per season. Just small local Peru trekking specialists where the guides know the mountains because that is where they are from. Where the local knowledge is real instead of a line in a website itinerary description. Therefore, a place where a trek feels like something more than logistics between two destinations.
